Rockstar is an all-gen movie: VK Prakash
V.K. Prakash says his latest directorial venture Rockstar is a rom-com that focuses on the value of relationships
Even when he is busy making ad films for noted brands and other language movies, he always marks his presence in Mollywood with feature films. V.K Prakash alias VKP, who last came with Asif-Ali starrer Nirnayakam, is now back in M’town with Rockstar, which has Thaikudam Bridge-fame Siddharth Menon in the lead role.
“Though it has been titled as Rockstar, my film is not a remake of the Hindi film of the same name. And it is not just a musician’s story. Yes… it deals with the life of a singer, but this film mainly focuses on the value of relationships, even though it comes under the rom-com genre,” says the director.
VKP says Rockstar does not target just new generation, but the existing generation too. “In this film, we discuss about the thoughts as well as the statements of these two generations. Though it deals with a serious subject, it is being told in a simple style which can entertain all type of audience. This story revolves around a musician and a beauty director,” he says.
It was around two years back that he zeroed in on this subject. “Rajashree Balram, who was then working with a magazine, is the screenwriter of Rockstar. It was after watching my films Beautiful, Trivandrum Lodge and Three Kings, she came to meet me with the screenplay. She was accompanied by her friend Eva Pavithran. I liked the subject and I found it a very challenging one for me as a director. Then we sat for around one-and-a-half years to lock the final script,” the director says.
It was around six months back that he fixed Eva as the heroine. “Though I knew that Eva was the daughter of Pavithran sir and Kalamandalam Kshemavathy teacher, it was when she came with Rajashree that I met her for the first time. In fact, she was not there to act. But when we started casting, I thought that she would be the better choice for the female lead,” says VKP, who later zeroed in on Siddharth Menon as hero.
“Siddharth is popular as a singer and stage performer. So I think people could easily relate the character with him,” he adds. VKP has also brought yesteryear actors Krishnachandran and Poornima Jayaram on board. “I was determined to avoid the conventional casting for this film. That’s why I approached Poornima madam, who was not active in the industry for 31 years, to essay the mother of heroine. Krishnachandran and M. Jayachandran are portraying the roles which have music background,” says the director.
VKP, who is busy with the post production of Rockstar which is slated to release on December first week, has not finalised his next. “Two subjects, written by Y. V. Rajesh and Anoop Menon, are under discussion,” the director sums up.
