Vairamuthu appears in contempt case
The matter came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Justice R. Sudhakar and Justice P.N. Prakash
Chennai: Lyricist Vairamuthu has appeared before the Madras high court in connection with a contempt petition filed against him in the court. The matter came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Justice R. Sudhakar and Justice P.N. Prakash.
Earlier, on a contempt petition filed by film financier S. Mukanchand Bothra of Sowcarpet, another bench comprising Justice Satish K. Agnihotri, and Justice K.K. Sasidharan, on October 28, 2015, had ordered him to appear before the court on November 25.
In the petition, Bothra sought the court to initiate suo motu contempt against Vairamuthu Ramasamy for allegedly undermining the dignity and integrity of the judges of the high court during his speech on September 12.
Bothra submitted that Vairamuthu addressed a gathering on the eve of late Justice P.S. Kailasm’s centenary celebration organised at Vidyodaya Auditorium, T. Nagar, Chennai. Among others, dignitaries Madras high court Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, superstar Rajinikanth and former union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram also addressed the gathering.
According to Bothra, during his speech Vairamuthu said “Just as the judiciary is watching society, society is also watching the judiciary. There are certain judges who are like Lord Rama. They are like fire and live like fire. They maintain this integrity all the time till six months prior to the retirement.”
Based on the request of Vairamuthu’s council R. Krishna Moorthy, the bench dispensed with the further appearance of the writer. The bench also directed the registry to place the matter before the Chief Justice to decide with regard to the posting of the matter before any other division bench.
