One-rupee stir against University Grants Commission

The protest aims at reminding the Centre of its responsibility to provide education to all

Kochi: The decision of the Central government to scrap the Non-Net fellowship from the next academic year has made the students of various universities in the city to protest in a unique campaign called “Siksha ki Sikka” or “Coin for Education”.

Each student will wrap a one-rupee coin and seal it and send it to the University Grants Commission under the ministry of human resource development as sign of protest on October 24, at a gathering in front of Mumbai University, Kalina Campus.

The protest aims at reminding the Centre of its responsibility to provide education to all. The students, through this campaign, demand the government include all research scholars registered in Central, state and deemed universities without conditions of “merit” or any other criteria.

The campaign is initiated by students of the University of Mumbai, International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS), Indian Institute of Technology- Bombay (IIT-B), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and other colleges and Universities in the city.

“We wish to extend our further support to the Occupy UGC movement in Delhi. These fellowships are crucial to students coming from economically backward families,” says Sarib Khan one of the organisers.
