Chennai: The unprecedented heavy rains during rush hours resulted in flooding of roads with vehicles getting stranded and thereby leading to severe traffic chaos in the city on Monday night, city police said on Tuesday.
Flooded subways in central and south Chennai added to the woes of motorists, police said. “We have been co-coordinating with civic body officials to pump out water throughout
the night,” a police officer said.
Flooding was reported in almost all major roads and connecting roads in the city on Monday evening. Anna Salai, Arcot Road, Kotturpuram, some parts of Koyambedu, TTK Road, Sardar Patel Road, Halda junction, Arcot Road and certain stretches in T Nagar and Egmore had over two-feet deep water and motorists were struggling with their vehicles in evening rush hour, the police officer added.
“Pumping out water from St Thomas Mount subway and Thillai Ganga Nagar subways continued till Tuesday evening. Sardar Patel Road was flooded because of overflow of water from Raj Bhavan premises. Police and corporation employees were working throughout Tuesday as well to pump out water, a senior police officer said.
