Schools plead for term exams to be put off

Pointing out that schools in several districts which were closed for Deepavali remained closed so far due to heavy rains, K.R. Nandakumar, secretary, TN nursery, primary, matri, higher secondary schools association, said that as rain continued to pound, schools remained closed for over a week and they couldn’t complete the syllabus for half yearly exam, which takes place in December.

“Now that we have very less time left for us to finish the curriculum, we request the school education department to postpone half yearly exams by at least a week. We are even ready to keep schools open during Dec. holidays and Saturdays to complete the syllabus,” he said.

Dr N.Vijayan, correspondent, Zion group of schools, said the schools follow continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) upto class VIII and they cannot carry forward this term’s syllabus to the next term, so they have to complete the curriculum before November end to conduct exams in December. “Keeping this in mind, we request the government to postpone half yearly exams for all classes so that we can complete the lessons and conduct exams later,” he said.

An official in the school education department said that they would take up the issue with the government, which would take a call.
