Consider installing CCTVs in govt offices: Madras High Court

The petitioner submitted that government offices faced the problem of middlemen interference
Chennai: The Madras high court has directed the chief secretary to consider a representation seeking installation of CCTVs in government offices to prevent corruption and take a decision within two months. A Division bench comprising Justices Satish K. Agnihotri and P. Devadass passed the order on a petition by N. Logu, secretary, Coimbatore Consumer Voice.
The petitioner submitted that government offices faced the problem of middlemen interference. Unauthorised persons have been permitted to handle important official records. Over the years, their role has become indispensable.
He said “As there are no strict regulations to control the entry and exit of these persons, the presence of brokers is looming large and dominant in government offices”. He hoped that setting up of CCTV cameras in all government offices would ensure a transparent system of governance.
The transport commissioner had acknowledged the gravity of the problem and had issued a circular dated May 5, 2009, instructing officials to prohibit unauthorised persons from entering government offices and handling official records. The order has not been strictly enforced by all Regional Transport Officers. However, no action has been taken.
As no action was taken on his representation to the authorities, he filed the present writ petition.
