Chennai: On Monday evening, not just several thousand commuters faced tough time in wading though the worst ever traffic snarl in Chennai. The Chief Justice of the Madras High court, Sanjay Kishan Kaul, also underwent the ordeal.

The Chief Justice said this when an advocate K. Balu, drew the attention of the First bench, which also comprised Justice Pushpa Sathyanaranaya, regarding the ordeal faced by Chennaites on Monday night. Balu said due to traffic snarls, people were affected for several hours. He alleged that traffic police did not regulate vehicles from Monday afternoon.
He prayed the court to direct the authorities and police to find alternative routes during such unforeseen situations. Denying the allegation, the government pleader S.T.S. Moorthy said police regulated traffic effectively.
The Chief Justice observed he was stuck in traffic for three hours. This is an unnatural occasion. The government should not reject complaints regarding this. He said people destroy nature and in turn nature destroys us. Later, Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana said alternate arrangements should be identified during such emergency situations.
