3 athletes among 4 dead as van falls into canal
MALAPPURAM: Malappuram was shaken by yet another tragedy on Monday night when three athletes of Ernakulam district junior handball team and another person were killed in a road accident.
Eleven athletes were returning after participating in the state handball championship at Kozhikode when their van fell into a canal near Edappal killing the four and injuring seven others, one of them seriously. Earlier on Monday, five persons were killed in a bus-lorry collision at Aikkarapadi.

The deceased were identified as Sudheesh, 15, son of Sunil, Kadavanthara, Kochi, Amal Krishna, 15, son of Shaji, Paravoor, Athul Raj, 15, son of Rajeevan, Mullavalappu, Kochi, and Xavier, 52, Kokkoor, Changaramkulam, the uncle of one of the participants. Police said the condition of Mohammed Sameer, 15, was critical.
The accident took place at 11. 35 p.m. at Beeyam near Edappal. Xavier had taken the children to Chamravattom to have dinner in his house.

When they were going towards Edappal, the van first hit an electric post, lost control and fell into a water-filled gorge near a canal after hitting a tree on the right side of the road.
The local people, police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and pulled out the passengers from the van. The injured were admitted to a private hospital in Thrissur and the Government Medical College, Thrissur.
