GST to have Congress’ demands

The Congress is seeking changes like inclusion of alcohol, tobacco and electricity under GST

New Delhi: With just three days to go for the Winter Session of Parliament to commence, the Centre may face fresh challenges from parties like the JD(U), the AIADMK, and even the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), in both Houses against its efforts to get the contentious Goods and Services Tax Bill passed.

Sources aware of the development indicated that in order to corner the Congress the government may accept the changes which the main Opposition party has been suggesting in the GST Bill. The matter of opposition from other parties still remains.

The Congress is seeking changes like inclusion of alcohol, tobacco and electricity under GST. It is opposed to the one per cent additional tax that states were allowed to levy.

The government, sources added, is likely to accept these suggestions, mainly to pressure it in Parliament to get the legislation cleared. However, it may have to take into consideration opposition to the Bill from the two Bihar-based parties.
