Frenetic activity before Khammam Municipal Corporation polls

There are four per cent SC voters and 14 per cent ST voters

Khammam: The ruling party wants to remove the bottlenecks to win the hearts of voters before the Khammam Municipal Corporation elections. Local TRS leaders prepared a report on the chances of TRS in the Corporation and what should be done by the government to set things right. The reservation of KMC mayor’s post to ST woman is the first barrier for the party. Because of reservation, financially sound leaders and the persons whose caste is dominant in certain pockets in the town are distanced to the elections. The local TRS leaders stressed the need in change of reservation to give a good fight in the elections. There are 2.44 lakh voters in 50 divisions in KMC and the caste-wise details should be displayed in KMC office by November 19. These voter lists with the caste-wise details were sent to political party offices.

It is found that there are four per cent SC voters and 14 per cent ST voters, 50 per cent BC voters and the remaining 32 per cent belonged to other forward castes and minorities.

The political parties were asked to send their objections on the list and November 23 is the last date. Interestingly, about 11 objections came from various political parties. The caste details are useful to political parties in fielding candidates. TRS leaders have also explained that there is some discontentment against the government among voters. The allocation of 400 double bed-room houses to Khammam Assembly segment is another hurdle for the party.

Congress and YSRC made it a big issue and staged a relay hunger strike. Minister for roads and buildings Tummala Nageswara Rao apprised the situation to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and got approval for another 1,600 double bedroom houses to Khammam town on Monday. It is planned to lay a foundation stone for these houses before the election notification is issued. There is also a plan to give nominated posts to some of the leaders in the town to work with commitment in the elections.
