Flooded schools may trim Christmas holidays
With water-logging in several parts of the city, many schools have also gone under water
Chennai: With relentless rains, schools across the city are in a quandary about when to resume functioning. Schools across the state have been closed for over 10 days because of incessant rains and were expected to reopen on Monday, but the dates have been postponed again.
With water-logging in several parts of the city, many schools have also gone under water. “With continuous heavy rains, most schools are affected in some way or the other. We have water in our playgrounds and around other parts of the campus as well that we are trying to dispose off,” the principal of a prominent school in K.K Nagar said. While some schools have managed to drain out the water with the help of tankers, they are still not fully equipped to reopen, as the roads outside the schools remain water logged.
“Though the situation is not as bad as it was a few days ago there are several part of the roads that have stagnant water in the locality, “ said a representative of Sherwood school in Chetpet.
Faced with the immediate issue of water logging, schools are now also worried about completing the syllabus in time as they have already lost 10 days due to heavy rains. When asked how schools would make up for lost time, many schools said they were awaiting government orders and would plan accordingly.
Nevertheless, many schools have already decided on full working days on Saturdays and some schools have also decided to cut short on their Christmas vacations.”We are terribly behind in our schedule. We definitely need to make up for it by organising extra classes on Saturdays and we will have only around four days holiday for Christmas,” said an official at Chettinad Vidyashram. Other international schools said they were already holding meetings to revise the syllabus to compensate for the delay.
While private schools have to rework their academic schedule, reopening of government schools seems less of a possibility as many schools have been thrown open for residents whose houses have been flooded.
