OP Sharma suspended for offensive comment against AAP colleague

Sharma made the comments during a discussion on homeless people

New Delhi: BJP lawmaker OP Sharma was suspended from the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday for his offensive words against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party's Alka Lamba during a discussion. Sharma, one of the three BJP lawmakers in the assembly, was suspended till Thursday amid demands to keep him out for the entire winter session.

AAP lawmakers also demanded an apology from Sharma and his BJP, threatening to boycott the house. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his shock over the comments and hoped that the BJP would take action against its lawmaker. "Am shocked at language used by O P Sharma, BJP MLA, against a lady lawmaker. 2 days back also, he abused a lady MLA. Hope BJP will act against him," he tweeted.

Sharma made the comments during a discussion on homeless people and night shelters in the city.

The discussion was initiated by opposition leader Vijender Gupta of the BJP, who accused the ruling party of neglecting the homeless. Lamba intervened in the discussion saying that the deaths were not because of the cold weather but drug use. Sharma then shot back with an offensive personal comment against her.

The AAP-dominated house dissolved into chaos as lawmakers went to the Speaker's chair and shouted slogans demanding Mr Sharma's expulsion. Speaker Ram Niwas Goel asked the BJP lawmaker to apologise but he hasn't so far.
