Google celebrates the 41st anniversary of discovery of Lucy
Lucy shows the evolution of bipedalism
Google’s new doodle marks the 41st anniversary of discovery of Lucy, which shows the evolution of bipedalism.
Lucy was a name given to a set of fossilized bones dated 3.2 million old, which was discovered in 1974 in Ethiopia by paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson.
Lucy belonged to species called Australopithecus afarensis.
When the structure of the skeleton was assessed, it was found that it was a female and hence they called it “Lucy”. Her skeleton showed that she was 3’3 tall and weighed approximately 60 pounds.
This discovery till date is considered as a crucial stepping stone between apes and Homo sapiens.
Lucy's bones are housed in a museum in Ethiopia.
