Fight masters, all
Action always works, and fast-paced racy movies are what the audience wants... and Sandalwood delivers
It’s been an action packed season, in Sandalwood. The fact that racy fast moving films have always ruled the roost in cinema, film makers all over are falling over each other to give the audience the best of stunt and scene! Which is probably also the reason sequels are making their presence felt as global brands. From diehard fans to brave heart audiences, they all keep coming back for near death stunts on the big screen. Even Sandalwood has seen a sea of change in its action-packed films in the recent past. Almost every hero has been in the news for breaking a bone or getting hurt while performing stunts. Bengaluru Chronicle goes behind the scenes to give you the stunt story, as it unfolds.
Sandalwood’s famous stunt director who choreographed Bollywood superstar Salman Khan in Jai Ho, and later went onto to do many more Bollywood and multilingual projects, Ravi Verma feels that new and innovative stories inspire directors to choreograph breathtaking sequences. “One of the main reasons Sandalwood and other industries are giving more importance to stunts is because of the young talent and producers who make movies with love, and not just with a business bent of mind. Producers, who love films are willing to provide the needed requirements. If Bollywood wants to catch up with Hollywood in terms of technical presence, Sandalwood and its neighbouring industies are vying to beat Bollywood which is a good trend,” says Ravi Verma.
A fight master known for choreographing in a unique manner, Different Danny, who has so far done 450 projects says, “Unlike the past, the risk factor is much lesser with new technology. However, it is a great boost that all the heroes and newcomers are prepared to experiment and do stunts themselves.” With 14 years experience as a stunt master, Danny has choreographed several super stars including namma annavru late Dr Rajkumar in Shabdavedi. “With the experience of working in other industries, we update ourselves while working in Sandalwood. The latest ones are Kalpana 2 and I am currently working on Dodmane Huduga,” says Danny while remembering fight masters Sahasa Y Shivaiah, Horse Babu, Ram Shetty, Thriller Manju, Nanjundi Nagaraj and many more who were the ones to start the action packed trend early on.
Ravi Verma agrees with Danny on technical aspects, expressing that though heroes in the past worked harder, and risked their lives, it would usually not show on screen, compared to present day, where we plan well in advance with the technology support, and heroes are more prepared, willing to perform on their own.
Before the fight gets over, Ravi Verma recollects unfortunate incidents like the one in Jarasandha in which his own brother sustained 15 stitches on his head and another incident where he jumped into water with fire on his body without knowing swimming. He mulls about whether such risks are worth it. For the audience though, the action makes it worth the while! And that is not changing any time soon.
