Shooting at New Orleans in US, 16 people taken to hospital: report

Witnesses told WWL at least two gunmen were shooting into the crowd

New Orleans: At least 16 people were hospitalized after a shooting at a playground in New Orleans, a local TV station reported on Sunday, citing police.

WWL TV said the shooting occurred around 7 p.m. local time (0100 GMT on Monday) while about 500 people were at Bunny Friend playground in the city's Upper Ninth Ward for the making of a music video.

Witnesses told WWL at least two gunmen were shooting into the crowd. The Times-Picayune newspaper quoted witnesses as saying they saw several people lying on the sidewalk after the shooting.

Several ambulances were seen leaving the scene and 10 of the victims were taken to University Medical Center in New Orleans, WWL said.

The mayor of New Orleans called on people who were in the park where a shootout erupted and wounded 16 people to come forward with information.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu said late Sunday in comments aired by WWL-TV that people need to come forward with information so that police can do their job.

Landrieu was speaking alongside police chief Michael Harrison at the park where the gunfire erupted earlier.

Landrieu said the shooting is not something that can be tolerated in the city.

No one was killed in the Sunday evening shooting that happened as hundreds of people had gathered at a local park. Police say two groups of people in the crowd opened fire on each other before running away.
