Thiruvananthapuram: The new city corporation council is staring at dangerous potholes and is likely to go for interlocked tiles to reinforce roads. It will also cut recurring costs.
Most of the corporation officials are increasingly advocating them due to rising traffic. Some of the young councillors had even won voters promising such roads.
“As per government norms, the roads under the corporation or panchayats cannot be concretised before tarring like highways. This is because these roads are small and packed with underground utilities,” said a senior official attached to engineering wing.
“With the traffic density going up, it has become a necessity. It has proved successful not only in other states but Alappuzha too.”
The mayor said since funds were limited, the corporation would look at smarter ways to maintain roads.
“The quality of construction is always an issue because a civic body has to satisfy citizens in every ward. We will look for more efficient models,” he said.
The worst among the city roads include those in Chalai, Kalady-Thaliyal, Konchiravila, Sreekanteswaram- Eraviperoor, Sreevaraham-Mukkolakkal, Aryasala- Kannettumukku-MP Appan Road, Pangode, Kochar Road, Adarsh Nagar, Akshara Veedhi and Thrippadapuram- Attipra.
Work in some of these places are expected to begin by December and will go on till March, which is the regular deadline for utilising funds.
