Kochi: The authorities are battling space constraints at its main Ernakulam depot even as the Thevara depot is idling though its work has been completed.
The KSRTC had originally issued a circular setting November 1, 2014 as the deadline for starting operations from the Thevara depot, now made the hub of the Kerala Urban Road Transport Corporation.
Though the depot was inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on April 12, the bus operations are yet to start from there.
This, even as the administrative offices have started functioning and the work of the garage too has been completed at the three-acre yard at Thevara.
“The plan is to shift nearly 50 low-floor buses to the Thevara depot. However, heavy machinery and tools are yet to be deployed at the garage there. The exact date of starting the operations is yet to be decided by the higher authorities,” said Ernakulam district transport officer Joy George.
The Ernakulam depot is the largest in the state in terms of the number of buses allotted – 178. The corporation also is mulling shifting the Thiru-Kochi services to Thevara.
“We’re planning a city unit like Thiruvananthapuram at Thevara to operate dedicated services. The time schedule and services will be reworked to benefit more commuters in the city and its outskirts,” an officer said.
