KPCC in quandary over disciplinary action

A three-day introspection meeting of the KPCCwill be kicked off on Monday by Sudheeran

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The KPCC leadership is in a catch-22 situation with all 14 district sub-committee reports recommending action against the rebel candidates in the local body elections.

K. Muraleedharan MLA, K. Sudhakaran and home minister Ramesh Chennithala have opposed disciplinary action though KPCC president V. M. Sudheeran is for it. Most of the leaders have demanded action for the sake of discipline.

A three-day introspection meeting of the KPCCwill be kicked off on Monday by Sudheeran. On the first day, Kollam, Kannur, Wayanad and Kasargod sub-committee reports will be discussed.

Mr Sudheeran had softened his stand in the case of Kannur Corporation, but dissident leader P. K. Ragesh voted in favour of the LDF in the mayor election triggering a war of words between him and Sudhakaran.

A senior Congress leader told DC that the leaders who headed the sub-committees in 14 districts have been inundated with complaints on the candidature in the civic poll.

“Initially, the KPCC leadership was not aware of the gravity of the situation. But the sub-committees received an avalanche of complaints. The ball is now in the court of Sudheeran,” said a Congress leader.

Another leader said the KPCC would have a tough time ahead in axing several leaders, including the DCC presidents, for fielding the wrong candidates. But Sudheeran wants action first against those who pushed the rebel candidates in the fray.

“All the election committees in the districts should be made accountable. In the case of Kochi Corporation, KPCC vice-president V. D. Satheeshan, MLAs Benny Behanan and Dominic Presentation and others zeroed in on a first-time councillor Shiny Mathew for the mayor post. How did that happen”? asked another senior leader.
