Child drowns outside home in rainwater
A boy Lokesh, just over a year old, died on Saturday in Pallikaranai after drowning in stagnant rainwater right outside his house. More than 30 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the city so far.
One and a half year-old Lokesh, son of Angalandeshwari and daily wage earner Janaki Raman, was last seen around 9 pm Saturday playing on the steps of his house situated in Kamakshi colony in Pallikaranai.
The incident occurred while Lokesh’s father was away from the house and his mother was in the kitchen. The mother had asked Lokesh’s 3-year old brother to look after him even as she had left the door open.
When the family noticed that the child was nowhere to be seen, they started to search all over the house. The family found it difficult to look for the child in the dark. But, about an hour later, a family member spotted clothes floating in the water, which is when the child was found and immediately taken to a private hospital nearby where he was declared dead on arrival.
Nearly two feet of water had stagnated inside the compound walls of their house ever since the heavy rains started in the city. It is believed the child accidentally slipped while playing close to the water. The body was shifted to Chrompet GH and a case lodged by the Pallikaranai police.
