Tondiarpet sees rise in diarrhoea cases

Corpn commissioner maintains that there is nothing alarming or unusual
Chennai: As many as 113 diarrhea cases have been recorded in the city during November, according to data obtained from the Chennai corporation. Tondiarpet, which witnessed heavy waterlogging and also had sewage mixed with floodwater, had 69 of these cases.
However, corporation commissioner Vikram Kapur maintained at a press conference on Saturday, that there was nothing alarming or unusual about the number of people falling sick.
“This is only the normal that we expected. There is nothing alarming,” said Kapur. Social welfare minister Valarmathi brushed aside questions alluding to the spread of communicable diseases in Chennai.
“It is not true because we have the situation under control,” she said. Health officials told DC that the pattern in Tondiarpet which also had the highest number of fever cases this month at 462, was not unexpected. “The pattern is in sync with what we have seen in the Tondiarpet zone in the last few years. The area is endemic to communicable diseases,” said the official.
However, leptospirosis cases have not been recorded so far, the official said. “The Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet is seeing at least 30-40 admissions of fever and diarrhoea cases every day,” the official said.
