Hyderabad: After drawing heavy flak from residents of some industrial pollution-affected areas facing the problem of smelly gases spreading in the air, the Telangana State Pollution Control Board has decided to take steps to control it.
TSPCB officials decided to buy electronic equipment for the purpose worth Rs 1.5 crore. Tenders for acquiring them have already been released. The equipments will be used for detecting and analysing Volatile Organic Compounds like Benzene, Toluene, Xylene and Methylene chloride which are the main reasons for the obnoxious smells.
An important part of the pollution control measures would be installing permanent VOC analysers at strategic places in areas which suffer from pollution in the Patancheru and Bollarum industrial areas. These analyzers will be able to not just detect the level of VOCs in the atmosphere but also the amounts of individual compounds. The analyzers will be connected online to the servers of the pollution control board for real time monitoring. A custom made software is being acquired for the purpose by the TSPCB. Recently bids from five companies were received for it of which two have been selected after technical review. One company is from Pune and other from Hyderabad. Their financial bids will be received by December 5 after which one of them will be selected.
The TSPCB will also be acquiring an Automated Thermal Disorber for about Rs 40-50 lakh which will be kept in its central laboratory. This equipment will be used for analysing air samples brought in from industrial and also residential areas manually in VOC sampling tubes. Tenders for twelve portable VOC analysers have also been released by the TSPCB. The equipment will be given to all regional offices for monitoring as soon as there is a complaint.
A vehicle is also being purchased for night patrolling. An official from TSPCB said, “Buying all these equipment as per procedure will take some time but we are sure that by January 2016 we will be better prepared to tackle pollution.”
