Governor Rosaiah calls for interlinking of rivers

Statistics reveal that India receives about 4,000 cubic kilometer rain annually
Chennai: Governor K. Rosaiah stressed on the immediate need of interlinking of rivers in the country keeping in view the rate of depletion of underground water table and the expected rise in population in the years to come.
“National Water Ways Development Agency (NWDA) states that India’s maximum irrigation potential that could be created through conventional sources is assessed to be about 140 million hectares. For attaining a potential of 160 million hectares and to ensure food security to our population in 2050 as
per study, inter-basin is one of the techno-economically viable solutions,” he said at a conference on ‘River linking by national waterways’ at VIT campus, Vandaloor on Saturday.
Tamil Nadu government has also urged the Centre to interlink rivers in fifth meeting of the special committee for interlinking of rivers at New Delhi and has requested that the work at ground level should be started immediately to interlink the peninsular rivers, he said.
Statistics reveal that India receives about 4,000 cubic kilometer rain annually. “It is high time we formulate plans to preserve and prevent such huge wastage of water,” he said.
