Dr K Mohammed Basheer loses no time, takes charge as Calicut University Vice Chancellor
Dr Basheer said that his priority would be the welfare of students
Kozhikode: Kerala University Registrar Dr K Mohammed Basheer assumed charge as the 11th vice chancellor of Calicut University on Saturday morning.
51-year old Dr Basheer is also the youngest VC of Calicut University. Since the in-Charge VC Dr M.K Abdul Khader was already present at Thiruvananthapuram to attend the Chancellor’s meeting, the official handing over of power took place late evening on Friday.
Dr Basheer, who was welcomed by Registrar Dr. Abdul Majeed and varsity staff convened a meeting with various department heads and teachers. He is the first VC in the 47-year history of University, hailing from the same panchayat and district the University is located in.
Addressing the press after the assumption of office, Dr Basheer said that his priority would be the welfare of students. The University will function with the co-operation of all stakeholders including students, teachers, non-teaching staff, senate and syndicate.
“The timely conduct of examinations and issuing of certificates at the stipulated time will be done with the coo-operation of staff. I will also take steps to get better NAAC grading for the University,” he said.
Earlier, Dr Basheer’s decision was to arrive at the University on Monday because of the meeting convened by the Governor to assess the performance of the VCs for the ‘Chancellor’s Award for Best VC’. However at midnight, he decided to travel to Thenjippalam as it was made clear that the in-Charge VC Dr M.K Abdul Khader had to attend the meeting.
