Yogi Adityanath barred from entering Allahabad

Officials said that the students’ union had not taken permission for the event

Lucknow: BJP MP Yogi Adityanath was barred by local administration from entering the Allahabad district where he was invited to a function organised by the Allahabad University Students’ Union (AUSU) on Friday.

District magistrate Sanjay Kumar and SSP K. S. Immanuel told reporters that the BJP MP had been advised against entering Allahabad and was told that he may have to face ‘action’ if he insists on coming. The officials said that the students’ union had not taken permission for the event and the university has also been asked not to give permission for the same.

Two groups in the students’ union have been locked in a row over extending of the invitation to Mahant Yogi Adityanath. The president of the students’ union, Richa Singh, who has been opposed to the visit of the BJP MP, began a hunger strike on Thursday night, seeking cancellation of the programme.

She was apparently upset at her name being printed, alongside those of other office-bearers, on posters put up by ABVP.

Ms Singh, who became the first woman to be elected to the president’s post after Independence, had fought the elections as an independent candidate and emerged victorious owing to the support she received from Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha.

The university authorities have suspended classes on an emergency basis for the day in view of the prevailing situation on the campus.
