Vijayawada: New irrigation policy on cards

He said that the government would complete the Polavaram project by 2018

Vijayawada: AP irrigation minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao entered his new irrigation ministry office here on Friday. On this occasion, he said that the government will provide new technology to monitor all development works across the state from the irrigation office.

Besides, he said that the government would complete the Polavaram project by 2018 and it has also allot Rs 10,000 crore for irrigation projects. He said that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is very keen to complete the projects as early as possible.

The state has unique weather and geological conditions, he said, and added that already several districts are witnessing heavy rainfall and some of them are facing drought-hit conditions. Significantly, excess water is flowing into the sea for the last several months in another area, he added.

He said that the government was conducting enumeration for crop losses due to heavy rains. Gundlakamma project is already for water storage, he said, and added that Thotapalli reservoir was also dedicated to nation.

The minister said that the government would take steps to introduce new irrigation policy by discussing with intellectuals, students, officials and people from various walks of life. Several irrigation officials were also present and congratulated the irrigation minister.
