Kovan moves Madras High Court to quash case against him
Chennai: Tamil folk singer Kovan, who was released on bail in a case of alleged offence of sedition, has filed a petition before the Madras high court seeking to quash the FIR registered against him by CCB personnel.
The singer has submitted that “hailing from a downtrodden family, I was inspired by Marxian ideology, principles of social reformer EVR Periyar and Dr Ambedkar. I joined Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam, which was functioning for more than three decades with an objective of developing the working class and to abolish caste system.” He said the organisation had been engaged in building a movement among the people on various issues faced by them.
During his career, he had sung and released several songs and performed a number of road shows. So far, even a single allegation had not been levelled against him or his songs. He alleged the inspector, CCB, Chennai, registered a false case against him for singing a song demanding closure of liquor shops. Without any material evidence, the police registered a case and arrested him. The arrest was against the Constitution and human rights. Justice R. Subbiah has ordered notice to police and adjourned the matter to December 1.
