Kheny remarks expunged

The incident took place in the Legislative Assembly on Friday
Bengaluru: Janata Dal (Secular) members ensured that statements made by Karnataka Makkala Party member Mr Ashok Kheny on farmer Suicides was expunged from the records, contending that it was ‘anti-farmer’.
The incident took place in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, when Mr Kheny was speaking on the drought situation in the state and quoted a report by ISEC National Fellow Mr R.S. Deshpande over different reasons for farmer suicides.
While only 61.6 per cent of suicides were due to distress caused by indebtedness, the other suicides were attributed to family problems, personal habits, losses incurred while investing in chit funds and so on, Mr Kheny said.
JD(S) member Shivalinge Gowda intervened and asked who prepared the report to which Mr Kheny said it was by Mr R S Deshpande. “Who is Deshpande? What does he know about farmers and their conditions? Some academician has done a report and you, a businessman is quoting it in the Assembly. It deviates attention from farmers’ problems and could even deprive them of compensation. I demand that you withdraw the statement,” Mr Shivalinge Gowda charged.
When Mr Kheny tried to justify his statement, Mr Shivalinge Gowda urged Dr Malaka Raddy, who was in the Chair to expunge the statement.
