THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Election Commission has constituted a high-level expert team headed by Mr Rajat Moona, director- general, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, to probe into the mass malfunctioning of electronic voting machines in Malappuram and Thrissur during the local body polls on November 7.
CDAC executive director B. Ramani and technical expert K.R. Sreevalsan, former pro-vice-chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University, are the other members of the committee which will examine whether the EVMs malfunctioned due to technical snags or any external interventions.
The committee has been asked to give its report within one month, State Election Commissioner K. Sasidharan Nair said. The SEC decided to constitute the committee in consultation with the Election Commission of India.
The Electronic Corporation of India, manufacturers of the EVMs, had earlier informed the commission that the malfunctioning could be considered only as an unusual phenomenon. This points to the chances of a bid to sabotage the polls.
However, the election commission has decided to refer the matter to the police only after confirming that there were no technical snags. Some 300 EVMs had developed trouble in Malappuram during the polls. Adhesives and other materials were allegedly used in a few ballot units.
