Chennai: Foreign currency worth Rs 66 lakh seized

DRI sleuths arrest carrier on tip off
Chennai: Investigators of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized foreign currency worth over Rs 66 lakh from an air passenger bound for Singapore at Chennai airport. The passenger, a resident of Triplicane, was also arrested for carrying unaccounted money.
DRI officials identified the hawala carrier as Thameem Ansari Yasar Arafat, who was intercepted at the airport based on a tip off, just before he boarded the Singapore airlines flight on Friday 2.30 am.
He had stuffed currencies of Euro and US dollar in the secret chambers created on top and bottom of his huge suitcase. He had spread the foreign currency notes in such way in those concealed chambers and it would have been difficult to detect if there was no tip off, DRI sources said.
“He was just a transporter who was looking for quick money. Usually such carriers make good money. The payment varies from Rs 10,000 and above depending on the value of currency they successfully deliver in the destination,” sources added.
A DRI official noted that Thammem Ansari was not regular carrier but it looked like he was part of gang engaged in carrying hawala money. “We are trying to locate his handler,” the official added.
