Medical seats in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh join national pool
Hyderabad: A four-decade-old obstacle to secure medical seats under the “national pool” for Telugu students is all set to be cleared soon.
Both Telangana state and Andhra Pradesh governments are keen on joining the 15 per cent “national pool”. However, the national pool will be applicable only for government medical colleges.
United Andhra Pradesh was exempted from the national pool due to Article 371(D), which was enacted in Parliament in 1973 due to the special political conditions prevailing in the state, to ensure education and employment opportunities only for locals. J&K was exempted due to Article 370.
However, after united AP’s bifurcation, both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments felt there was no longer a need for Article 371(D) and expressed willingness to join the national pool and sought the Centre’s approval.
By contributing 15 per cent of the states’ seats to the national pool, students in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will be eligible for 15 per cent quota in all the states, which will lead to more opportunities for Telugu students.
