Where are the docs in rural areas? Minister U T Khader under attack
Bengaluru: Health and Family Welfare Minister Mr U.T. Khader came under heavy fire from members belonging to all political parties in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday including Speaker Mr Kagodu Thimmappa.
Twice, Mr Kagodu came down heavily on Mr Khader and even asked him to scrap the counselling process for posting of doctors in rural areas. The incident took place during question hour, when Mr Khader was answering Congress member Mr N.A. Haris over appointment of doctors in government hospitals.
While Mr Khader was answering the question, members complained that there was shortage of doctors in government hospitals, especially in rural hospitals. Mr Khader defended himself saying that the recruitment process of government doctors was complete and the government had already released the list.
The doctors have been asked to join work soon and by December end, the doctors’ problem would be solved. Soon, the department would start counselling to give postings to these doctors.
However, the house was not satisfied and said that the minister had made the same assurance during the last Assembly session too. BJP MLA Mr Sunil Kumar wanted to know if the minister would resign, if he was unable to complete recruitment process by December end.
Mr Kagodu Thimmappa intervened and warned Mr Khader that this was not the style in which a responsible government should behave. “It is already two and half year since the government came to power. Only half the term is remaining and still you are in the process of recruiting doctors. Besides, scrap that counselling system. It has become a big scam, the doctors posted through counseling never report for duty in remote rural places,” he charged.
