State ministers and bureaucrats have been directed to speed up relief works

Chennai: Pointing out that school children have lost their notebooks and uniforms due to water logging, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Thursday directed the school education department to distribute new notebooks and uniforms to all government school students.

In a statement, she said several families have also lost their family cards in the recent deluge. Those who have lost the cards will get duplicate cards shortly, she said.

State ministers and bureaucrats have been directed to speed up relief works. Draining of storm water is underway on a war footing. Farmers who have lost their crops will get adequate compensation, she said adding the damage was relatively less due to the preventive steps taken by the government.

She condoled the death of 24 persons in rain-related incidents. Most of them died due to electrocution in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur. Expressing grief, she announced a relief of Rs four lakh to each of the bereaved families.
