SPDCL suffers Rs 12.75 crore loss due to rains

A maximum number of power distribution complaints reported in Nellore district

Tirupati: The Southern Power Distribution Corporation Limited (SPDCL) had suffered a huge loss of about Rs 12.75 crore due to damage of its sub-stations, transformers and power lines because of the heavy downpour that lashed many districts in the state for the past few days.

This include the damages in Nellore district which bore the brunt of the cyclonic effect and was estimated at Rs 11 crore followed by Chittoor Rs 61 lakh, Kadapa Rs 45 lakh, Krishna Rs 34 lakh, Guntur Rs 25 lakh and Prakasam Rs 8 lakh. “We have estimated the loss through our officials and we are taking steps to restore the lines at many areas,” said SPDCL chief managing director H.Y. Dora.

A maximum number of power distribution complaints reported in Nellore district where transformers in many villages were damaged due to rains. “Power supply was disrupted in 816 villages in Nellore district and the supply was restored in 742 villages,” Mr Dora said.

He also said in Chittoor district, 152 villages were affected of which power was restored in 148 villages. He further said that efforts are on for the restoration of power supply in the remaining villages where heavy damage was reported to power supply lines and sub-stations.

In Kadapa and Prakasam districts are also several villages were affected, however the number is less than Nellore and Chittoor. The electricity staff has been attending to the complaints in groups where the power supply was disrupted due to rains to restore the power supply.

Except Nellore town, almost all the villages in the district were affected where power supply was disrupted. “Control rooms were set up in all the district headquarters to facilitate the consumers to contact the control room for any emergencies like snapping of power lines, transformers damage and also to electric poles, power disruption for immediate action,” Mr Dora said.
