KOZHIKODE: The lack of public toilets in the city has put the citizens in serious trouble. Although over 20 modern toilets were set up in the city during the last one year, only less than five are functional.
As part of the World Toilet Day, a few students of Vismaya Multimedia institution in association with Sthreechethana, a women’s forum, took to the streets on Thursday and brought the issue to the notice of the new corporation council.
The students presented various competitions and games, including essay writing, painting and poster writing.
“The United Nations had declared November 19 as World Toilet Day to focus attention on a critical health need of more than 2.5 billion people in developing countries, including India, for proper toilets,” said Ambadi, a student of Vismaya institution.
“There are many closed electronic rooms installed at various parts of the city in the name of e-toilet, spending huge sums. But none of them are working properly and some have frequent complaints. Therefore, the public also fear to use them,” he said.
“We have also highlighted the fact that diarrhoeal diseases are the second most common cause of death in children,” he pointed out. This is one of the first of its kind of protests organised by school students in the district.
