Jayalalithaa calls Rajnath Singh for relief funds

The weather office forecast more rains for the next 24 hours

Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa apprised the union home minister Rajnath Singh of the current situation in TN Thursday due to the unprecedented rains and floods. A statement from the secretariat said that Ms Jayalalithaa, in a telephonic conversation, briefed the Centre on the rain related damage in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Cuddalore.

The CM has detailed the precautionary measures taken by the state and also the extensive, immediate relief and rescue efforts launched. She also outlined the manner in which the state agencies engaged in relief and rescue efforts, coordinating effectively with central government agencies including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, Air Force, Navy and the Coast Guard.

Thanking the Union home minister for the assistance rendered by the Central agencies, she demanded that a team from the Centre be sent to Tamil Nadu at the earliest on receipt of the Memorandum from the state on rain related damage, the statement said.

The state government is currently assessing the flood damage across all the rain hit areas and the TN government will submit its detailed memorandum seeking assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund and other Central Government funds by November 23, the release said. The CM has demanded that the Centre speedily depute the central government team to process the speedy release of funds.

Later in the day, home minister Rajnath Singh, who is now in China, said on Twitter that he had spoken to the TN Chief Minister and assured of all possible help.
