Improve condition of women prisons, says Madras High Court
Chennai: The Madras high court has directed authorities to take efforts in improving the condition of women prisons in the state.
The First bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana passed the order when a batch of writ petitions came up for hearing.
The court has directed the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority (TNSLSA) to convene a meeting with the government and others stake holders to discuss the condition of women prisons for improvement. Highlighting the pathetic condition in lock-ups and women prisons in the state, the petitioners sought a direction to improve the condition of women prisons.
Earlier, the Bench had constituted a panel, headed by TNSLSA member-secretary. It also appointed advocate Sudha Ramalingam as amicus curiae to assist the panel and the court.
The panel submitted its report containing various suggestions, including constitution of Visitors Committee. On perusing the report, the bench directed the committee to meet again for the implementation of its recommendations and to submit the position before the court. The Bench posted the matter for further hearing on January 25.
