DNA profiling Bill pending in Parliament since 8 years

The process would also help in resolving paternity issues

Hyderabad: DNA profiling of citizens will help deal with many issues, say experts. Though expensive, the database would help citizens and government agencies and the police to solve many disputes.

DNA profiling of unknown dead bodies or victims of fire accidents and natural calamities will help officials to identify the family members.

Experts say the profiling will also help the police trace criminals and avoid human trafficking. The process would also help in resolving paternity issues.

However, the DNA Bill introduced by the Center is still pending in Parliament. DNA fingerprinting or genotyping is a process where a DNA databank is set up with DNA profiles of people.

In 2007, the family members of an undertrial prisoner had lodged a missing complaint with Medak Police. A few days later, cops had found a burnt dead body in Alwal area.

The physical evidence of the deceased, collected from the crime scene, matched with the identification marks provided by the family members.

“But the DNA profiling of the body and his so-called parents did not mat-ch. On investigation, it was found that the undertrial had killed another person and burnt his face and by using his clothes and identity card, he made cops believe that he had been killed, but he was actually absconding,” said scientific officer of Hyderabad Police, Mr Venkanna.

DNA profiling had also helped cops to identify the relatives of the Palem Volvo bus tragedy that had claimed 45 lives.

DNA profiling requires a small part of body tissue. While bodies that are burnt to ashes in fire accidents cannot serve the purpose, experts have found that human tissue can withstand very high temperatures, even an IED explosion. The DNA Bill was introduced by the Center eight years ago but still remains pending
