Kamal’s film can’t be remade in other languages

Ilaiyaraaja composed the movie’s music

Though there were reports claiming that Moondram Pirai, the cult classic of Balu Mahendra will be remade in three languages — Hindi, Tamil and English by popular ad filmmaker Lloyd Baptisa who has bought the remake rights from Raj Sippy, the makers of the original films Sathyajothi Thyagarajan denies giving its rights to anyone.

Talking to DC he said, “Except for Hindi rights, which we gave to Raj Sippy long back who remade Moondram Pirai as Sadma in Bollywood, all other rights are with us. The information of someone remaking its Hindi version may be possible, as he could have taken the rights from Sippy sir. But, he cannot remake it in Tamil, or for that matter in any other language.”

The veteran producer added, “I am planning to rerelease Moondram Pirai’s digitalised version with DI, colour correction and enhanced sound and the work is in progress.” Ilaiyaraaja composed the movie’s music, which was a talking point for its soul-stirring and peppy numbers.

“Raja sir wants to give a new touch to the background score and he is already in the process of recreating the magic,” Thyagarajan reveals.

The film, which featured Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in the lead, was critically acclaimed and tasted huge box office success. It even fetched a national award for Kamal for his alluring performance and Balu Mahendra for his brilliant cinematography.
