It took a double murder to wake up Mangaluru jail staff
Prison authorities, forest department chop tree branches protruding towards the premises from outside
Mangaluru: After the double murder that took place inside Mangaluru district prison two weeks ago, authorities have begun tightening access to the area by chopping branches of the trees protruding towards the prison. As a first step in closing probable access points, prison authorities with the help of forest department chopped all the branches protruding towards the prison premises from outside.
It is suspected that the weapons used for the murder of Madoor Yusuf and Ganesh Shetty was dropped from outside using the huge tree protruding in to the prison near District Institute of Education and Training (DIET). Allegations have been made earlier that these branches were used to drop various objects into the prison premises.
As many as two small trees and branches of about four trees were chopped on Wednesday by the forest department officials in DIET premises. The branches of some trees in the premises of nearby college adjacent to the prison too would be cut in a day or two. Authorities are also planning to post a Home Guard outside the prison to ensure that nobody throws anything inside the prison from the road.
Meanwhile, to enhance the security inside the prison, authorities have decided to conduct a joint survey with the PWD officials to install mobile jammers. There are allegations that mobiles are used by the prisoners within the prison premises. Installation of jammers would put an end this. The government has already provided the jammer machine but authorities are yet to install it.
“Mobile jammers would help in increasing the security in the prison. PWD officials will visit to the prison on November 20 and conduct a joint survey with us to finalise the spot to install jammer machine. If the work is conducted quickly, the installation would be a matter of just a few days,” Prison Superintendent Krishnamurthy said. Authorities have transferred the accused in Yusuf’s murder to another prison. “We are taking all necessary steps to ensure that there is no problem in the prison,” Krishnamurthy assured.
