Illegal dumping of garbage at Kengeri

Over 10 truck loads of garbage has been dumped in Kengeri and Ullala ward in the last few days

Bengaluru: A pilot car and four motorcycles often accompany a vehicle late night or early morning to Kengeri ward. However this has nothing to do with any VVIP visiting the area. These vehicles escort a truck laden with garbage to be illegally offloaded at some open space on the Kengeri outskirts. Those in the pilot car and motorcycles ensure there is no opposition from local residents. This was revealed by none other than Kengeri ward corporator V. V. Satyanarayana.

A health inspector who recently tried to obstruct dumping of garbage in Kengeri area was roughed up. Later, he brought the issue to the notice of the ward corporator and a complaint was lodged with BBMP commissioner G. Kumar Naik, Satyanarayana said.

Over 10 truck loads of garbage has been dumped in Kengeri and Ullala ward in the last few days. Following health inspector’s complaint the supporters of corporator kept a vigil to nab those dumping garbage; however, over the last two days no garbage truck turned up.

Trucks carrying unsegregated garbage from Gandhinagar, Chikpet and Basavanagudi and dump them in the ward during late night or early morning. They are accompanied by thugs to ensure smooth dumping of garbage at the place of their choice, Satyanarayana said.

“I have lodged a complaint with Mayor B.N. Manjunath Reddy and BBMP Commissioner to take stern action against illegal dumping. Since the waste was not segregated it was not accepted at the waste processing units. They are forced to dump anywhere. I have sought the help of BBMP and prahari, BBMP patrol vehicle. Our supporters will patrol to catch these culprits,” the corporator said.

D. Lingaraj, a resident of Ullal, asked what was the point in paying garbage cess to BBMP if garbage was dumped in our backyard? Besides, 0.5 per cent cess is also being levied as Swachch Bharat cess. The citizens are only burdened with cess he said.
