Guntur: Heart transplant at Government General Hospital
Guntur: Heart transplantation services in Government General Hospital (GGH) at Guntur will start from December. As many as 99 open heart surgeries were conducted in the GGH and now it is heading to conduct heart transplantation.
There is no heart transplantation facility in government hospitals of AP and GGH will be the first hospital to conduct it. GGH officials are making all arrangements, including establishment of isolation ward to start heart transplantation from December. Bypass surgeries were started in the GGH under private-public partnership (PPP) on March 18 this year with the cooperation of
Sahrudaya Health and Medical and Educational Trust (SHMET). A team of doctors led by famous cardiothoracic surgeon Dr A.G.K. Gokhale is conducting bypass surgeries and till now 99 surgeries were successfully completed in a span of eight months.
The GGH is spending Rs 30 lakh for an isolation ward which is required for heart transplantation. There is no heart transplantation facility in the 13 districts. Hence, the GGH would be the first state hospital having such a facility. The modern modular equipment installed in the Podila Prasad block is going to be helpful to start heart transplant services.
The GGH officials said that already two patients of Guntur agreed to go for heart transplantation after the completion of the isolation ward in December first week.
Dr Gokhale and his team are happy over the completion of 99 bypass surgeries and starting of heart transplantation facility. The government already gave permission to Dr Gokhale’s team to perform heart transplantation in the GGH.
Heart patients G. Venkateswarlu and others said that the GGH is growing day-by-day as the best hospital of AP and with the starting of heart transplantation service it would become like NIMS of Hyderabad in future.
They added that as Guntur is located centrally for the 13 districts of AP, the government should develop it into a super-specialty hospital to serve the needy people of the Andhra Pradesh.
