Chennai endures flooding

Schools closed till Nov. 22
Chennai: Much to the relief of the people of Tamil Nadu, the fury of the northeast monsoon spell has subsided with only a few districts experiencing rain on Wednesday. Life is slowly getting back to normal in Chennai and Cuddalore, the two places worst hit in the long wet spells from November 7 to 16.
After backbreaking rescue, rehabilitation and relief work, the government agencies are now trying to avert any major epidemic outbreak in Chennai and neighbouring districts which were badly hit by the rains.
“Nearly 200 medical camps have been held in the rain-hit areas where 55,000 people were examined. Mobile medical camps, in which doctors are sent to the attend on people at home are also functioning,” J Radhakrishnan, state health secretary told this newspaper as he inspected one such camp in SIDCO Nagar, Villivakkam in Chennai on Wednesday evening.
More than 36,000 persons have been screened so far in just the mobile camps, noted a state health official. According to him, several additional medical camps have been set up in low-lying areas where people are stranded in their houses or in relief camps.
In Kancheepuram, over 11,000 persons have been screened through 106 medical camps while 9,372 persons benefited in 89 such camps held in Thiruvallur district. There are as many as 402 mobile medical units on the job in the state. “We have asked local authorities to ensure adequate chlorniation of water bodies so that the probability of dysentery and vector borne diseases could be controlled,” he said.
