Overambitious parents negatively affect child’s academic performance

Academic achievements increased only when parental expectations were realistic

Even scientists have now confirmed what has been known for long – pressurizing kids in schools does not improve their academic performance, in fact it can end up doing more harm than good.

The study involved analysing data of 3,530 secondary school students and their parents through the years 2002 to 2007. It was conducted in Germany and assessed math achievement of the students along with parental aspiration and expectation on an annual basis. It was found that high parental expectation increased academic achievements only when it did not exceed realistic expectations.

These findings were published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, according to IANS.
