No end to Malabar’s wait for GAIL gas line

The project is set to resolve the acute shortage of LPG in Malabar where there is a delay of 45 days to get refills
Kozhikode: The GAIL pipeline project, which envisages linking LNG supply to a national grid and providing piped LNG to households, is yet to be implemented in Malabar even though in some of the districts, steps have already been taken for its implementation. The project is set to resolve the acute shortage of LPG in Malabar where there is a delay of 45 days to get refills.
According to Malabar chamber of commerce forum members, it was the unscientific alignment of the GAIL project that resulted in its non- implementation in Malabar region and hence the project was unlikely to roll-out in the near future.
At the same time, the announcement of local body elections and the polling arrangements in the State was also a roadblock for the implementation of the project anywhere in the State.
“Once the GAIL project is implemented, it will help consumers to cut their monthly household expenses by half. GAIL has planned to give domestic LNG connections in Ernakulam where the project was completed,” said MA Mehaboob, Secretary of Malabar chamber of commerce.
“We have decided to conduct a meeting with officials of the GAIL project demanding its urgent implementation that will benefit the public and also industrialists to a great extent. Due to frequent labour strikes at Chelari bottling plant of the Indian Oil Corporation serving Malabar, supply of refills are hit, hence the implementation of the project will help in resolving the issue,” he added.
