Chennai: A petition filed before the Madras High court seeks direction to the police to accord permission to celebrate the birth anniversary of Moghul emperor Tipu Sultan, which falls on November 20.
In the petition, Thamilaga Makkal Jananayaga Katchi, Gudiyatham in Vellore district, represented by its state deputy general secretary, A. Ismail, submitted that Tipu Sultan was a great freedom fighter and he had fought many wars against the British in the colonial era to get freedom for the country. In order to emphasise the secular credentials of the country and society, we have decided to celebrate his birth anniversary, which falls on November 20, in Gudiyatham, the petition said.
In an order dated November 13, Gudiyatham inspector denied permission to the organisation to hold a public meeting stating that there was law and order problem in Bengaluru and the police feared a similar problem in Tamil Nadu. Aggrieved over this, Ismail filed the petition.
When the matter came up for hearing before, Justice M.M Sundresh, the judge ordered notice to the Gudiyattam town police to file its counter and adjourned the matter till November 20.
