Faulty Medical College Hospital machine makes patients suffer

Now, the workload is too much, and cancer patients get dates on availability
Kozhikode: No effort was taken to repair the defunct radiation machine at the radiotherapy department of the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for the last two months. The official apathy has affected a large number of cancer patients in the queue for radiation.
There are three radiation machines in the hospital—Linear accelerator (Linac), Theratron 780 E and Elight-100. Of this, Elight-100 is dysfunctional.
At least 300 patients used to be diagnosed with the help of these three each day and sources say the defunct machine alone diagnosed 100 people a day.
Now, the workload is too much, and cancer patients get dates on availability. “The situation is worse now. Two times we received for radiation have deferred. It is unfortunate that authorities do not repair them,” K.C. Hamza, a complainant, told DC.
He added that poor patients from neighbouring districts like Malappuram and Wayanad could not afford to come frequently for dates.
Meanwhile, Dr T. Ajaykumar, head of the radiotherapy department, said the machine was too old and difficult to get repaired. “This is not a problem with Kozhikode MCH alone. It’s tough to locate technicians,” he said.
