Doctors wanted to shift Osmania General Hospital building, all patients

OGH doctors wanted proper facilities before shifting patients

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao had stated that the old OGH building must be shifted and demolished to make way for the new building. But before the demolition of the old block, which is a heritage structure, the patients have to be shifted.

Due to improper construction of false ceilings and toilets, there is a lot of seepage in the old building. In the last three months, there have been incidents of false ceilings crashing down in the hospital. Due to these incidents there was constant pressure from doctors at OGH to shift the hospital to a location safe for both patients and doctors.

Superintendent Dr Raghu Ram said, “For shifting patients and providing proper treatment, it is important to ensure that there is proper infrastructure like toilets, rooms and also well equipped operation theatres. The GO ensures that these aspects will be taken care of.” OGH doctors are happy as they wanted proper facilities before shifting patients to these two hospitals.

Dr Nagendra, president of the OGH Telangana Doctors’ Association, said, “The government has also accorded permission for hiring of vehicles for transportation of patients which was needed. The emergency department will be operational in the emergency block and out-patient department of the hospital at Afzal Gunj. Only these three blocks will be shifted there. Hence transportation is required to shift patients regularly.”

The medical and surgical wards are going to be shifted to Petlaburj and the orthopaedic ward to King Koti Hospital after the completion of works by the Telangana Medical Infrastructure Development Corporation. Meanwhile, the government is quiet on what it will do with the existing building.

A senior doctor said, “We appreciate the shifting of the hospital but the old building must be repaired and renovated. It is an iconic building and the government must take care of it.”
