Accused involved in more than 25 cases, cops recover 80 tolas of gold

Hyderabad: Hyderabad police on Tuesday arrested two notorious chain-snatchers, who were involved in nearly 25 such snatchings, including the one in Osmania University area in July 2015, in which a 40 year-old woman was injured and succumbed while undergoing treatment. Nearly 80 tolas of gold and one motorbike were seized from them.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner, M. Mahender Reddy said that the accused Habeeb Hassan and Habeeb Abbas, natives of Hyderabad shifted their location temporarily to Aurangabad to evade the police.

The duo, who are textile traders, are involved in property offences, house burglaries, robberies and wanted in several cases in the city and other areas.

“They targeted locked houses and looted them and shared the booty equally and spent it on luxuries. They were imprisoned for the same and after release from prison, they focussed on chain-snatchings,” said the commissioner.

On July 17, 2015, P. Sanjay, along with his mother Ms Sumitra were riding a bike in Osmania University area. They withdrew money from SBH ATM at Lallaguda and were proceeding towards their home at Barkathpura, through the University. When they reached the Law College area, snatchers attacked her.

“When they reached the Law College area, Abbas came from behind on a Pulsar bike and snatched a 3.5 tola gold chain from her, due to which she fell down and suffered severe head injuries,” said the Commissioner.

She succumbed on July 26, while undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Based on a tip off, the east Zone Task force apprehended the duo at Narayana Concept School, located on Street No. 11 in Osmania University area. Cops seized nearly 80 tolas of gold and a bike from them and the accused were handed over to the Osmania University police for further investigation.
