Eyewitnesses left stunned by attack on Chittoor mayor

They opened firing immediately after entering into the chamber

Chittoor: The eyewitness of the assassination of the mayor Anuradha and attack on her husband Mohan in broad daylight in the mayor's chamber, said it was a terrible and sudden attack by assailants.

The Telugu Desam town president M. Mohan, who was present at that time, told the police that the attackers came to the office in the burkhas to give a flower bouquet to Mayor Anuradha under the pretext of appreciation to mayor. They opened firing immediately after entering into the chamber and also attacked with knife.

Another TD leader Satish who was present there at that time told the police that they attacked with gun and knives at both Mohan and Anuradha and claimed that they all trembled at the unexpected incident.

He gave the police in a statement that he and M Mohan were panicked with the attack and the attackers were fled from the place before they tried to stop them. He also said that nobody could be identified as they have masks to their faces and they removed mask after leaving the room and they also left a pistol at the incident spot.

Anuradha still had 1 year left as Mayor

Katari Mohan and his wife Anuradha have go-od political career and they have many admirers in the town. The Chittoor town started mourning for the untimely death of Anuradha and her husband.

Katari Mohan entered into politics in the 1990 itself as a small time activist in Telugu Desam and he was elected twice as councillor befo-re 2007 from Gangan-apalli area as the TD leader.

He has long association with the TD and he never shifted his loyalties to any other party during his 25 years of career.

Anuradha was elected for the first time as councillor in 2007 and again she was elected as councillor for Ganganapalli in 2014 and adorned the mayor post. She was the first woman mayor to the Chittoor Municipal Corporation.

Section 144 imposed in Chittoor

The police has imposed Section 144 under CrPC in Chittoor to avoid untoward incidents as the mayor was the assassinated by her close relative on Tuesday. A posse of police landed here to prevent violent incidents by the supporters of the deceased mayor and the police stationed at many junctions and narrow streets in the town.

Police force from Tirupati urban district was deployed in Chittoor and also from Kadapa district to strengthen the force to prevent unpleasant incidents.

The police have declared high alert in the district and according to it, men in groups were not allowed to gather at any place. Chittoor SP Srinivas said they were busy in investigation and additional forces were deployed from adjoining districts.

Mr Srinivas also said they are suspecting the role of Chintu alias Chandrasekhar who is the nephew to deceased mayor Anuradha and they are searching for him to arrest. But, the Chittoor SP denied surrendering of three others who were involved in the nefarious act.
