The battle of two games

Star Wars Battlefront and Rainbow Six Siege have their own pros and cons

As two of this year’s biggest shooters — Star Wars: Battlefront and Rainbow Six Siege hit the market, the difference between how EA and Ubisoft are structuring their DLC is striking and noteworthy.

Battlefront is taking a more traditional approach to its DLC, an expensive season pass which offers more of the core multiplayer experience with a whopping 16 new maps, four modes and four heroes from the Star Wars universe. This form is no different from all other multiplayer shooters in recent years and as a result the community is split after the DLC launched. It’s shocking to see both Call of Duty and Battlefront not deviating from their models, especially now that games like Halo 5 and Rainbow Six: Siege are making all DLC maps free for the entire user base.

As mentioned, all maps for Rainbow Six will be free, which is a healthy move in maintaining a strong community well after launch. It’s also taking a more interesting approach with how the season pass is structured. It will grant you a seven-day early access to all eight DLC operatives which is another name for the game’s classes. You will also receive a permanent boost for earning Renown, in-game currency which can be used to unlock every gameplay item. Exclusive skins for weapons and bonus daily challenges that grant more xp and renown are also a part of the season pass.

Ubisoft’s approach to this season pass is a bold move, which goes against everything they have been offering in recent years. In comparison to Battlefront, it looks like the Rainbow Six approach offers nothing of real value. But at the same time, since the maps are already free it costs a lot less to get access to all of the game’s content making it a much more appealing purchase as opposed to Battlefront.
